What is the Map of Meaning?

The Map of Meaning is a research-based framework developed by Dr. Marjolein Lips-Wiersma. Over twenty years and across hundreds of people from many cultures, she discovered that human beings find meaning through six consistent dimensions — and that when these dimensions are depleted, anxiety and suffering follow.

The map sits on two axes: self to others and being to doing. Their crossing creates four territories, each containing pathways to meaning that human beings across cultures recognize as essential.

The six dimensions

Integrity with Self — being true to who you are, acting from your actual values rather than what is expected of you.

Unity with Others — genuine connection, belonging, shared values. Not just being around people, but actually being known by them.

Expressing Full Potential — bringing your unique gifts into the world. Creating, achieving, and contributing in a way that feels genuinely yours.

Service to Others — making a difference. Contributing to the wellbeing of others and the world in a way that feels meaningful, not obligatory.

Grounded in Reality — being present and embodied. Living in actual experience rather than in worry about the future or regret about the past.

Inspiration and Purpose — being animated by something larger than daily tasks. A sense of calling, direction, or participation in something that matters.

Why does this matter for anxiety?

When one or more of these dimensions becomes seriously depleted, anxiety often moves into the space where meaning used to be. Research across cultures confirms that anxiety, burnout, disconnection, and loss of purpose are almost always accompanied by specific patterns of meaning depletion — and that restoring those dimensions is one of the most direct paths back to wellbeing.

What is Spiral Dynamics?

Spiral Dynamics is a map of how human consciousness develops over time — both in individuals and in cultures. It was developed by psychologist Clare Graves and expanded by Don Beck and Chris Cowan. Think of it less as a personality test and more as a description of the worldview you are living from right now — and the one that may be calling you forward.

Each stage represents a different way of making sense of the world — a different set of values, motivations, and anxieties. No stage is better or worse than another. Each one is a perfectly intelligent response to the life conditions a person is facing.

Beige & Purple — Survival, safety, and belonging to a tribe.

Red — Power, autonomy, and self-expression on your own terms.

Blue — Order, purpose, and meaning through a higher cause or code.

Orange — Achievement, strategy, and the rational pursuit of success. Most driven professionals live here.

Green — Meaning, connection, equality, and the inner life. The longing for something more than achievement.

Yellow & Turquoise — Integration, systems thinking, and a felt sense of wholeness. Rare and still emerging.
